Calf Injury Recovery

by Mario

Dear Bloggers,

What is the best way to recover from a calf injury? Ran outside for the first time in early March and two days later ran inside on treadmill and in the middle of workout calf tightened up and the pain started.

Stopped workout and I rested it 5 - 7 days and tried to run with little success. Rested it again 10 days and only able to run briefly for a few minutes. How long should I rest and can I speed up recovery?

Those are exactly the symptoms I had last year when after several years without running I chose to train for a 10k. After the second injury I saw a doctor, got an ultrasound, and was told to do the RICE thing. (I didn't run for the rest of summer; I couldn't WALK without pain for months).

A month ago I was bowling (of all things!) and after my second strike of the day I did a little happy dance... And a hop.... And I slipped a little in the stupid bowling shoes, And POP! Felt like someone hit me in the back of the leg with a bat.

I have a partially torn Achilles' tendon. The way in which it is torn doesn't make for candidacy for surgery. My left leg has been immobilized (cast, then boot) and I've been on crutches for 5 weeks. It's the absolute pits, because I am generally quite active. This level of physical limitation, with no clear end in sight, is really tough on me, and on my family.

SO.... Be sure you don't have a more serious tendon problem going on before you return to running. I really wish that I had treated this problem much more aggressively before it started wrecking Summer of '14. :-(
